Life After The 405 Survivor Story

Bob Main is a retired entrepreneur, executive, and consultant who has spent the last 34 years rebuilding his life after surviving the crash of Flight 405. What began as a tragedy became the foundation for an extraordinary journey of resilience, determination, and hope.

After the crash, Bob refused to let trauma define his future. He overcame severe physical injuries (including spinal fusion surgery), PTSD, and a deep-seated fear of flying through sheer willpower, the unwavering support of his friends, and especially his wife, Joyce. Rather than avoiding planes, he faced his fear head-on—eventually accumulating over a million miles flying domestically and internationally. He also got back to lecturing. He has lectured to audiences internationally.

After taking some time off, Bob returned to the working world. In his first job, he did not need to fly as part of his responsibilities. But after that, there were no limits. Eventually, his career flourished. He got a job as the CEO of an optical retail company, then as an SVP at a publicly traded online optical company. Eventually, he and Joyce started their own company (which they later sold), and then he went into consulting. To end his career, he started a company that developed specialized vision-testing equipment for NASA (funded by NASA grants).

Bob and Joyce have been happily married for 34 years and have two children. They now live in Lakeland, Florida, where Bob has retired to focus on what matters most: family, reflection, and finally confronting the emotions he'd kept locked away for three decades.
