Book Prologue
They say you’re more likely to die in a car accident than in an airplane crash. The statistics are comforting—until you’re the statistic.
On March 22, 1992, I boarded USAir Flight 405 at LaGuardia Airport. That night, of the 51 people sitting in their seats at takeoff, 27 lost their lives when our plane crashed. Twenty-four survived—I was one of them.
I was thrown from the plane into the freezing waters of Flushing Bay during the crash, facing severe physical injuries along with the psychological burden of trauma and survivor’s guilt. I’ve spent years trying to answer the haunting question: Why me? Why did I walk away when so many others didn’t? What am I supposed to do with this second chance?
Yes, this story is about survival. But more than that, it’s about love, resilience, and finding hope when everything falls apart. It’s about Joyce (my fiancé at the time, now my wife), who became my anchor.
I navigated a hospital stay, endless doctor visits and surgeries, relentless media attention, a torturous lawsuit, and the daily battle with PTSD. I discovered that survival isn’t just about physical healing - it’s about understanding what truly matters. Through pain, loss, and unexpected moments of grace, I learned that life after a catastrophe can still hold joy, connection, and hope.
This is based on my true story of what actually happened. This is how I survived. This is what I learned.
